About Scripture
This blog is mostly conceived as a sermon delivery system to those who missed it or want to hear it again. Truly, I hope that you need to know the scripture in order to best receive the sermon. I like to think that each helps the other be clear, relevant, meaningful, and helpful. I list the scripture in the blog. Really, please read it. At you computer you can do it online at Online Bible. Here you can look up the scriptural reference. You can also do word searches and the like. Really cool actually.
I read and study from the New Revised Version of the bible. When you go to this online bible you will see a drop down menu that lists a bunch of translations and some paraphrases. The New Revised will have the images and even words that I am using in the sermon.
I love scripture. I find it endlessly fascinating. Even the best known passages seem to have more truth and light to shine on God, people, life, faith, and me. And some of the least known bit are wonderful!
Okay there are also some bits that give me heartburn and a stomach ache. But even that reality is fascinating. I mean, when ever we thing we have things squared away, WHOOPS! here is one of those bits that give us heart ache and stomach burn. Once again we have to humbly think and rethink. Fascinating!
I think scripture is too important to read literally. I think about poetry; not history or journalism. I think about God and what the writer is trying to say to people of faith and to me. I admit that sometimes I do not understand it. But I know that for everything there is a season. Maybe in the next season I will understand some of the stuff. When I need understanding, I trust the Holy Spirit to open my eyes. I find that reading scripture is only partially a left brain activity. It takes our whole being to find the holy. There is something somewhere about ‘listening with the ears of our hearts’. Could be in a song.
